Former Memphis Mayor honored with plaque

MEMPHIS, TN — Attorney AC Wharton, Jr., was recently recognized by the out-going mayor of Memphis with the unveiling of a statue in recognition of his service to the city of Memphis.& Written below is the text that is displayed on the statue: AC Wharton Jr. served as Chief Public Defender, Mayor of Shelby County 2002- 2009,and City Mayor of the City of Memphis 2009-2015.Driven by his” One Memphis” vision of connected communities and people’, Mayor Wharton’s advocacy for health, outdoor recreation, walking, biking and transit led to a sea of change in how the built environment in Memphis is planned and constructed to accommodate all users. As Shelby County Mayor, AC Wharton was instrumental in the acquisition and subsequent development of the abandoned rail line that would become the Shelby Farms Greenline. When the 10-65mile Greenline was dedicated by then Mayor Wharton in 2010, it was the first time pedestrians and cyclist could travel to Shelby Farms Park from Midtown Memphis via a protected paved urban trail.
