Following a meeting on Monday, the governance board issued a press statement, marking its first response since Trump announced the dismissal of Kim Sajet, director of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The statement emphasized that hiring and firing decisions are solely the purview of the Secretary, supported by the Board of Regents. “All personnel choices are directed by the Secretary, who has the Board’s backing,” it stated. Lonnie G. Bunch, the Secretary, oversees the Smithsonian’s diverse offerings, including 21 museums and various educational programs. The board reiterated the institution's commitment to nonpartisanship, highlighting its mission to serve all Americans as a space for knowledge and discovery. It further pledged to enhance its neutrality efforts, emphasizing the imperative of remaining free from political pressures.
