Freeman Foundation Celebrates the Legacy of Basketball Icon Sonny Lewis

The Freeman Foundation for the Arts, alongside Reality Chek/57 Old Timers Inc., the Sonny Lewis Foundation, and Sky High Youth Services, is poised to revitalize St. Andrews Playground in Kingston Park with the Sonny Lewis All-Star Weekend on August 9-10. This two-day extravaganza aims to attract hundreds of families, athletes, and local residents, commemorating the enduring legacy of Sonny Lewis, who passed away on June 28, 1993. More than just a basketball lover, Lewis served as a math teacher and evening gym instructor, transforming the St. Andrews court into a vibrant learning environment. His approach emphasized that basketball was a vehicle for life lessons and personal growth. The weekend celebration will echo this philosophy, featuring competitive games, free food, entertainment, and giveaways from 8 AM to 8 PM. Samantha Lewis, his daughter, continues to champion her father’s vision. As the community pushes for renaming the park to honor him, this event will serve as both a tribute and a commitment, highlighting the transformative power of mentorship and community.
