The day following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Senator Robert F. Kennedy, during an event in Cleveland, addressed the “mindless menace of violence” that beset America, emphasizing the universal impact of such brutality. He remarked, “The victims of violence are Black and White, rich and poor, young and old, famous and unknown... Human beings whom others loved.” Kennedy questioned the purpose of violence, reflecting on its historical failures to achieve any noble cause. Alluding to the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, he expressed a collective sorrow that would soon deepen with the tragic loss of his own life two months later. This year, June 6 marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Established to honor Hadiya Pendleton, who was tragically killed in 2013, this day encourages individuals to wear orange, symbolizing a stand against gun violence. Through marches, rallies, and social initiatives this weekend, we strive to honor those impacted by gun violence, reinforcing a unified demand for change.
