This keynote address was delivered by Mildred Aristide, the former First Lady of Haiti, during the Samuel Dash Conference on Human Rights held on April 8, 2025. Jointly hosted by the Georgetown Law Human Rights Institute and the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, this year's theme was "Haiti and the Global Movement for Reparations." Aristide expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect virtually from UNIFA, a university founded by her husband in 2002. Highlighting the urgent humanitarian crisis in Haiti, she noted the challenges posed by rampant violence from armed groups, leading to food insecurity and the collapse of essential services. Aristide discussed Haiti’s complicated history with reparations, initiated in 2003 when her husband called for restitution from France for the 1825 debt. She reflected on the legacy of oppression, but emphasized her students' resilient commitment to building a better future. Their efforts represent both a struggle for justice and a path towards national healing.
