Juneteenth Celebration in Harrisburg: Honoring Heritage and Empowering Local Black Businesses

Harrisburg is gearing up for one of its most impactful Juneteenth celebrations to date. Organizer Dr. Kimeka Campbell underscores that this occasion goes beyond simple merriment; it’s a homage to history, solidarity, and the reclamation of economic power. “Juneteenth, for me, represents the celebration of African-American resilience that emerged even amidst the bonds of slavery,” stated the first-generation American. The theme for this year, One City, One Team, One Economic Impact, emphasizes community economics, showcasing support for Black-owned vendors and businesses. A significant highlight this year is the inaugural Juneteenth parade, led by community activist Eris Smallwood, featuring over 75 entries and 900 participants in homage to the historic Eighth Ward. “Our goal is to illuminate the events that shaped our narrative,” Campbell elaborated. A week of celebrations includes a VIP reception and a concert featuring rapper Jadakiss. Throughout the festivities, Campbell stresses the movement's aim of fostering economic empowerment for the entire community. “This celebration belongs to all who wish to uplift their neighborhoods.”
