Two sheriff's deputies in Louisiana, Javarrea Pouncy and DeMarkes Grant, brutally assaulted a Black man, Jarius Brown, commanding him to undress before delivering over 50 strikes that resulted in fractures to his eye socket and nose. The incident, which would have escaped justice without federal intervention, was captured on video. Initially, the Louisiana State Police exonerated the deputies, reflecting a troubling pattern of shielding corrupt officers from accountability, as stated in Brown's ongoing lawsuit. The assault occurred on September 27, 2019, following Brown's arrest for auto theft, compounded by possession of marijuana. Captured footage has recently surfaced in Brown's case, revealing probable excessive force and confirming his non-aggressive stance. Shortly after the brutal beating, federal authorities stepped in, leading to convictions: Pouncy received a 37-month sentence, while Grant was sentenced to 10 months.
