The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is advising the public to stay alert as health officials track a newly surfaced COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1. Officially designated as a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 23, this classification reflects concerns regarding its higher transmissibility and potential strains on healthcare systems. Although current data does not indicate that NB.1.8.1 results in more severe cases, its capacity for swift human-to-human transmission has been noted. Recent WHO findings revealed over 91,000 new COVID-19 cases reported globally from April 14 to May 11, a significant increase linked to the variant's emergence in 22 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America. Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, Chief Medical Officer, emphasized the low risk to Saint Lucia but urged adherence to health measures. Public guidelines include regular handwashing, avoiding gatherings when unwell, and wearing masks if symptomatic, alongside encouragement for informed cooperation with health directives. The ministry commits to ongoing monitoring and timely updates amidst evolving circumstances.
