Manhunt Continues: Louisiana Authorities Struggle to Recapture Prison Escapee at Large for Four Months

A convicted murderer remains the sole inmate at large after a significant escape from the New Orleans Justice Center over three months ago. Recently, two prosecutors who secured a conviction against Derrick Groves relocated from Louisiana due to fears of retaliation alongside their families. A victim's family has also gone into hiding, highlighting the ongoing threat Groves poses, now evading capture for 98 days. As of July, the FBI announced a reward of up to $20,000 for information targeting Groves. At 31, Groves was awaiting a life sentence for two murders when he orchestrated a massive jailbreak on May 16, where ten inmates escaped through a makeshift tunnel.While nine escapees have been apprehended, Groves remains elusive, prompting concerns that he is receiving assistance. This incident has cast a long shadow over the New Orleans justice system.In October 2024, Groves was found guilty of multiple violent offenses, adding to his criminal history.
