Historical Marker Unveiled to Honor Phyllis Wheatley YWCA Legacy

An Indiana State historical marker now graces Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, honoring the Indianapolis Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. Established in 1929 and named after the pioneering African American poet, this vital institution offered Black women and girls a refuge for education, recreation, and community. During the April 26 unveiling at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, community leaders underscored its impactful legacy. The YWCA not only provided leadership opportunities but also championed civil rights, and its storied history continues to inspire.
