Workers from the Texas Department of Transportation have commenced initiatives to clear debris and abandoned vehicles from roads in West Texas, also addressing vehicle fires. They provide assistance with flat tires and jumpstarting batteries. Initiated in July, this program targets Midland and Ector counties to mitigate the high risk of severe accidents, having already responded to nearly 500 calls and aided over 1,400 drivers. Debra Richmond, director of road safety initiatives for the Permian Strategic Partnership, emphasized the initiative's potential impact amid growing traffic and crash statistics. The Permian Basin struggles with congested highways where heavy trucks share the road with smaller vehicles. Although 2024 saw a slight reduction in road fatalities, ongoing efforts funded by $5 million aim for further safety improvements. This assistance model mirrors successful programs in major Texas cities. To get help, drivers in Midland and Ector counties can call 877-699-HERO.
