Cralle was an African American& businessman& and& who invented the ice cream scoop in 1897. Cralle was born on September 4, 1866, in Kenbridge, VA. Cralle studied at Wayland Seminary, a branch of the National Theological Institute. Founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Whose goal was to provide educational opportunities to newly freed African Americans. Comic by Sterling Haynes In the 1890s Alfred L. Cralle worked at a hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He noticed servers had issues with ice cream sticking to serving spoons. This made even more work for underpaid African American workers. Cralle’s solution was inventing a lever-action ice cream scoop called the “Ice Cream Mold and Disher”. Patent number 576395 was granted on February 2, 1897.
