Kilyn Lewis, a 37-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by Officer Michael Dieck of the Aurora Police Department last year while he held his cellphone and raised his hands. It took nearly a month for authorities to concede that Lewis was unarmed. Bodycam footage depicted Lewis complying with conflicting commands from multiple officers just moments before he was shot. Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney John Kellner concluded there was no criminal liability for Dieck, and a grand jury declined to pursue the case. Last month, Lewis' family initiated a wrongful death lawsuit, highlighting the police's excessive force and negligence. “This lawsuit seeks truth, ensuring Kilyn's life isn’t dismissed,” stated MiDian Shofner, family advocate. The historical pattern of racial profiling by the Aurora Police remains a significant concern. Watch the video below.
