Why Black New Yorkers Must Know I'm Running for Comptroller: A Crucial Conversation

With over twenty years representing Central Brooklyn in the New York State Senate, I have chaired influential committees, enacted significant legislation, and taught public policy at both CUNY and SUNY. Now, I am vying for the role of New York City Comptroller, a position pivotal for managing pension funds, auditing agencies, and directing billions of taxpayer dollars. Yet, many Black New Yorkers may remain unaware of my campaign—not by accident, but by design. I have been sidelined from official debates due to fundraising barriers favoring affluent donors, denying candidates like me a voice. This situation illustrates deeper issues of visibility and inclusivity in our democracy. As I campaign, I strive to ensure our communities receive the representation they deserve.
