For the first time since 2009, IndyGo is proposing a fare increase, raising single-trip fares from $1.75 to $2.75 starting January 2026. The move, prompted by rising fuel, labor, and maintenance costs, is intended to offset a 58% spike in operating expenses and avoid service cuts. Nearly 44% of riders—primarily low-income households—qualify for half-fare or free programs, and IndyGo’s MyKey fare system will continue to cap daily and weekly spending to ease the burden. Twelve public meetings and open houses will be held June 3–26, giving Indianapolis residents a chance to weigh in before the August 21 board vote. With 57% of riders living in car-free households, the proposal underscores how crucial public transit remains to economic access and mobility.
