A Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport (DIPT) employee sustained injuries in a backhoe incident on Friday in Castries.
Permanent Secretary Lenita Joseph confirmed that the DIPT had received reports concerning the incident at a work site on the Morne.
“This work site was part of the de-bushing and pre-hurricane works currently being undertaken by the department,” Joseph disclosed.
According to preliminary information, she said the boom of a backhoe clearing overhanging branches slipped and made contact with one of the workers.
The P.S. explained that although the worker was wearing a safety helmet, the impact caused head lacerations, and he was receiving medical treatment.
Joseph declared that the Department of Infrastructure takes its workers’ health and safety very seriously and remains committed to complying with health and safety procedures at all its offices and work sites to minimize the risk of workplace injuries.
“We take this opportunity to encourage all other entities engaged in construction or similar types of work to adhere to all safety policies and procedures at their respective work sites,” she stated.
