The College of Health Sciences at Jackson State University, a historically Black institution in Mississippi, has recently launched a new initiative to provide students with experiential learning opportunities while addressing health disparities in Mississippi.
The Wellness on Wheels mobile medical lab is designed to bring critical health services directly to individuals in need throughout the state, thereby reducing barriers to healthcare access and education that persist in many Mississippi communities. The mobile lab is capable of providing speech, language, hearing, and public health screenings to both children and adults. Students who are studying health sciences will gain experience in clinical settings through both observing health professionals and participating in hands-on learning opportunities.
“The Wellness on Wheels Health, Hearing, and Communication mobile lab exemplifies our commitment to expanding our educational strategies, ensuring that we fulfill our mission of producing students who think critically, address societal problems, and compete effectively,” said Brandi Newkirk-Turner, associate vice provost at Jackson State University. “It’s yet another way we empower JSU students to translate classroom knowledge into practical skills, equipping them to tackle real-world issues and make a meaningful impact in their communities.”
