In the recently unveiled 2025 Pulitzer Prizes, the late Chuck Stone, esteemed professor and journalist, received a posthumous special citation. This honor celebrates his remarkable contributions in journalism during the Civil Rights Movement and acknowledges his groundbreaking achievement as the inaugural Black columnist at the Philadelphia Daily News—later reaching nearly 100 publications through syndication. Additionally, Stone was instrumental in establishing the National Association of Black Journalists, a milestone reached 50 years ago. Hailing from St. Louis, Stone spent his formative years in Connecticut. A distinguished World War II veteran, he trained as a Tuskegee Airman navigator. Following his military service, he attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, graduating in 1948 and subsequently earning a master's degree in sociology from the University of Chicago.
