In a powerful effort to preserve and elevate Black voices, Joliet has launched the Joliet Area African American Historic Context Study, a project collecting firsthand stories to better understand the region’s Black history—and its present. The initiative, funded by Joliet and Will County, kicked off its first Community Interview event at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park & Theatre on May 17, with two more sessions scheduled for June 21 and July 19. “We’re trying to capture Joliet history in our own words,” said Chris Parker, president of the Will County African American Business Association. Residents are encouraged to share family stories, historical documents, and local lore dating back to the 1800s. Organizers hope these narratives will help chart a more equitable and informed future for generations to come.
