Juneteenth Tribute: ILWU Local 10 Honors National Day of Freedom and Reflection

Juneteenth occupies a unique and significant role within both San Francisco's cultural landscape and labor history. On Thursday, June 19, ILWU Local 10 will highlight this occasion at their Labor Temple, situated at 400 North Point St., starting at 10 a.m. As the newly installed president of ILWU Local 10, I encourage our community to acknowledge the substantial contributions of our members over the past century. This year, my documentary on labor leader LeRoy King has emphasized the remarkable impact of ordinary individuals through organized labor. As we approach this important day, we confront a pressing issue: the collective memory of our labor advocates—and their advancements in civil rights and collective bargaining—is fading. The heritage of Local 10, which resonates with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision, holds greater importance today than ever.
