Photo: You Tube/Netflix Filmmaker Lee Daniels is facing backlash over comments he made about a White character in his new film The Deliverance. Ahead of the Friday (August 30) release of The Deliverance on Netflix, Daniels praised actress Glenn Close for her portrayal of a White character in the film named Alberta. Daniels referred to the White woman’s role as part of the “fabric” of the Black community. “Every Black person knows an Alberta. She’s part of the fabric of our community, but we’ve never seen her on screen before,” Daniels wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Thank you Glenn for bringing her magnificently to life.” “The Deliverance is out on @netflix August 30,” he added, advertising the movie’s release. Social media users called out Daniels for generalizing the Black experience and speaking for the community with an authority he doesn’t have. With the film being based on true events, criticism mounted further over Daniels inserting a white character into a story that centers around a Black family.
