My experience with Alzheimer’s and dementia spans over 15 years, impacting two generations and leaving me with a tapestry of poignant memories. Having lost both my mother and husband to these relentless ailments, I have also gained invaluable insights and a profound understanding of caregiving. My mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2007 thrust me into a world of uncertainty; however, a transformative conference hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter equipped my brother and me with crucial knowledge to support her. Fast forward to 2021, when my husband began exhibiting dementia signs. Armed with lessons from my mother’s journey, I faced this new challenge without fear, recognizing I wasn’t alone. One critical piece of wisdom: caregiving need not be a solitary venture. I cobbled together a community of support, tapping into resources like the Alzheimer’s Association, from which we received guidance and camaraderie. Taking care of yourself is paramount—prioritize mental health and seek respite care. It’s about showing unconditional love while maintaining your own well-being. Together, let’s dismantle the silence surrounding these diseases and foster a culture of support.
