LUCELEC, the only electricity provider in Saint Lucia, has initiated a project aimed at enhancing the kitchen garden at the Stanley Jon Odlum School of Arts, Media, and Design (TVET Institute), collaborating with various corporate partners. Employees from LUCELEC partnered with the school's Environmental Club, which comprises 20 students and five teachers focused on encouraging sustainable practices and healthy eating. Teacher Snaliah Mahal highlighted the garden’s importance in supporting the Food & Nutrition department and the school's feeding programme.
“The kitchen garden essentially aids the Food & Nutrition department and our school feeding initiative,” she noted. “It helps reduce costs for students by providing produce we would otherwise have to purchase.” LUCELEC’s involvement exemplifies its dedication to youth development and sustainability, according to Senior Manager Omari Frederick. Furthermore, Inspector Alvin Faucher emphasized the significance of community engagement in crime prevention. The Environmental Club plans to promote backyard gardening while exploring sustainable livelihoods through the use of garden-grown materials.
