As global interest surges for immersive, nature-centric travel, Saint Lucia is enhancing its offerings with a pioneering initiative aimed at astro-tourism. LUNAA Journeys, spearheaded by local astrophysicist Cheyenne Polius, has inaugurated the Stargazing Facilitator Training Programme, touted as the Caribbean's first of its kind. This innovative four-week course, endorsed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), seamlessly integrates self-paced online learning with hands-on, practical workshops. Participants recently convened at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and will continue their training in Anse La Raye, honing essential skills under the stunning Saint Lucian skies. The curriculum encompasses not only telescope operation but also navigation of seasonal skies, cultural astronomy, hospitality, event management, and effective marketing strategies for stargazing events. Polius highlights the transformative potential of astro-tourism, believing that Saint Lucia's pristine night skies and minimal light pollution position it beautifully on the global stage. The program aims to certify at least a dozen facilitators, ultimately enhancing the local tourism experience while fostering public interest in astronomy. This initiative is just one facet of a larger vision to bridge the Caribbean with the international space sector.
