The Saint Lucia Lupus and Arthritis Association is urging the community to raise awareness about the difficulties encountered by individuals living with arthritis during October, recognized as Arthritis Awareness Month. This year's theme, "Achieve Your Dreams," highlights the resilience of those afflicted by rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions while promoting the importance of early diagnosis.
Hervianne Henry, a spokesperson for the association, emphasized, “One significant barrier is the financial burden of care.” As arthritis remains a chronic ailment without a cure, expenses for consistent medications, frequent medical appointments, and necessary blood tests can accumulate rapidly.
According to Henry, early diagnosis and lifestyle modifications are vital in managing symptoms. “Prompt identification can slow or prevent disease progression,” she noted, while maintaining an optimal weight and engaging in gentle exercises considerably contribute to alleviating joint pressure and enhancing muscle strength.
The association actively educates the public and healthcare professionals. Henry expressed a desire to further assist members meaningfully, highlighting a recent success in securing a wheelchair for a member in need.
