This pivotal commission is tasked with examining the enduring legacy of slavery and its ongoing impact on Black New Yorkers today. The formation of the Commission, a direct result of Legislation S.1163A/A.7691, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in December 2023, marks a historic step towards addressing the deep-rooted injustices and systemic racism that stem from slavery. This initiative reflects New York’s commitment to acknowledging its past and rectifying long-standing racial and economic disparities. Lurie Daniel Favors, a dedicated advocate for racial and social justice, brings her vast experience as an author, attorney, and activist to the Commission. With a JD from New York University and a BA in African and African American Studies from Pennsylvania State University, Ms. Daniel Favors is exceptionally qualified to contribute to this critical work.
