In the past, men were known for their tough exteriors and macho attitudes, which, on occasion did more harm than good where their health was concerned. Although times have changed and many are taking better care of themselves, others still need a push to get care.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading causes of death among men are heart disease, cancer, and most recently, COVID-19. That is why, this National Men’s Health Month, Parkland Health experts want to remind the men in your life to visit their doctor.“Prevention is an especially important aspect of care. Men should be aware of symptoms of potentially serious conditions,” said Noel O. Santini, MD, Vice President of Ambulatory Services and Population Health at Parkland. When considering alarming symptoms happening in your body, these three should not be ignored: Chest pain and/or shortness of breath – may be symptoms of a heart attack, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, or asthma. Fatigue – may result from exhaustion, lack of sleep, or stress, but it can also indicate congestive heart failure, diabetes, arthritis, and other diseases.
