When Ashley Smith from Georgia received her schizophrenia diagnosis two decades ago, it felt as if time had frozen. “I found out about my condition following a high-speed police chase, which led to my arrest—a profoundly challenging experience,” Smith recounted.Over the years, she recognized that treatment and optimism have been pivotal in guiding her from profound despair to a hopeful future. While obtaining exact statistics can be challenging, the National Institutes of Health estimates that between 0.25% and 0.64% of Americans are diagnosed with schizophrenia and similar mental health issues, typically arising in late adolescence to early adulthood.For Smith, the diagnosis itself was not the hardest element. “One of my greatest challenges has been being apart from my son,” she shared.
