Meet Caleb ‘Twizz’ Heath: Birmingham’s 18-Year-Old Jazz Drumming Prodigy on the Rise

As Caleb “Twizz” Heath positioned himself behind the drum kit at Birmingham's Carver Theatre, the surrounding sounds faded into oblivion. The 18-year-old was swiftly invited by Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame's José Carr to join a jam session. “Everything happened rapidly,” Heath reflected. “I was just there, then suddenly on stage. Initially hyper, my excitement heightened my anxiety—not from nerves, but from eagerness. However, once I began playing, I locked in, and all that faded.” With that, he unleashed the lively rhythms of Charlie Parker’s “Billie’s Bounce.”
