Meharry Medical College, renowned as a historic Black medical institution in Nashville, is broadening its horizons with a new facility in Memphis to combat ongoing health challenges in the area, notably elevated rates of HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and obesity. This initiative, named the "Office of Memphis Programs," was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting event on June 9 and will be situated at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church on a future mixed-use campus covering 23 acres within the Medical District, offering crucial support for students engaged in clinical training.
Rev. Jason Turner emphasized, “I consider this a remarkable chance to improve healthcare outcomes in Memphis.” Dr. James E.K. Hildreth Sr., the college’s president, revealed that this expansion aligns with their aspiration to create a permanent campus in Memphis. The training center will include classrooms, lounges, and faculty offices, ensuring students access comparable education to their Nashville counterparts, especially beneficial given Nashville's constrained hospital training capabilities. With additional clinics secured in Memphis, Meharry aims to significantly influence public health in the region.
