A 62-year-old man from Michigan has been sentenced to a year in prison for assaulting a Black mail carrier. The incident occurred in September 2024 when Russell Valleau confronted the postal worker after finding flyers promoting Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign in his mailbox. He verbally harassed her with racist insults, declaring he didn’t want that “Black b— in my mailbox.” The confrontation escalated when Valleau lunged at her with a knife, but she managed to escape by using USPS-issued mace. Despite being arrested, Valleau continued his racist diatribe. Convicted in February after a swift jury deliberation, his attorney claimed Valleau’s behavior resulted from mental health issues and alcohol dependence. Acting U.S. Attorney Julie A. Beck condemned the attack, emphasizing the unacceptability of such actions.
