Michigan Senate Approves Momnibus to Tackle Racial Disparities in Maternal Health

The experience of childbirth for Black women in Michigan is perilous, with a maternal mortality rate of 36.5 deaths per 100,000 live births—over twice that of white women. In response, the state Senate has introduced the Momnibus, a legislative initiative aimed at addressing systemic inequities in maternal health. Spearheaded by women of color, the bills encompass measures designed to promote accountability, enhance access to culturally affirming care, and ensure protections for laboring patients. The push aims to create a safer birthing environment for all mothers.
