In a disturbing episode echoing the Freddie Gray case, Connecticut police placed a handcuffed Black man into a police van without securing him, resulting in a sudden stop that left him paralyzed from the neck down. The individual, Randy Cox, was injured in June 2022 during what is termed a “rough ride.”Five New Haven officers faced misdemeanors, with Cox awarded a monumental $45 million settlement in 2023, marking a historic achievement for police abuse cases in the U.S. Recently, two officers, Ronald Pressley and Betsy Segui, accepted plea deals resulting in suspended sentences, avoiding incarceration. The remaining trio, including driver Oscar Diaz, opted for trial, citing confidence in their defense.Diaz, who was later reinstated and compensated for lost wages, claimed he abruptly halted to prevent a collision. Yet, his actions, along with the dismissive treatment of an injured Cox, have raised profound questions about police conduct and accountability. Attorney Ben Crump emphasized that such disregard for human life is unacceptable. (Photo: New Haven Police and family photo)
