President of the National Council on Public Transportation (NCOPT), Godfrey Ferdinand believes insurance premiums should not increase for drivers who have been accident-free for decades, while reckless drivers should face harsher penalties. In an interview with St. Lucia Times, Ferdinand argued that it was unfair to penalise safe drivers because of the “carelessness and the foolishness of [other] persons on the road”. “Do not raise persons’ premiums that have been driving for [over] 25 years without an accident,” Ferdinand said. “They should raise the premium of the persons that are involved in these accidents, or even refuse to insure them after two or three accidents if they are in the wrong.” He also proposed more severe consequences for individuals involved in serious accidents, suggesting that drivers at fault should have their licences revoked. Additionally, the NCOPT president called for a system to review accidents and implement a demerit point system. To further improve road safety, he recommended the use of speed guns by police officers.
