Finding suitable assistance amid illness, particularly when navigating a complex healthcare system, is often a daunting task. This challenge escalates significantly for those in need of an organ transplant. Fortunately, various state and federal resources are available to support individuals facing this situation. As of now, over 105,000 individuals are on the national transplant waiting list, with 92,000 awaiting kidney transplants. Notably, Black Americans represent the second-largest demographic, totaling 32,000. Many participants in our “On Borrowed Time” series highlighted difficulties in maintaining health insurance, obtaining legal aid, accessing low-cost food, and securing mental health resources. To alleviate these concerns, we have compiled an essential list of resources. Notable organizations include the National Disability Rights Network, the American Transplant Foundation, LawHelp.org, and various food assistance programs. Additionally, mental health support networks specifically cater to individuals from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that everyone receives culturally competent care during their transplant journey.
