National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) Director Kenisha Jeffrey-Isembert has advised residents of Saint Lucia to prepare for the upcoming 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which officially begins on June 1.
However, the NEMO Director explained that preparation should not be limited to hurricanes but include other potential hazards associated with Saint Lucia.
Experts have predicted that the upcoming hurricane season would be ‘hyperactive’.
“We want persons to be proactive rather than reactive,” Jeffrey-Isimbert told reporters on Monday.
She spoke after a weekend tropical wave brought heavy rainfall to Saint Lucia, experiencing a prolonged dry spell.
The dry spell prompted the Cabinet of Ministers to declare a water-related emergency.
NEMO issued an advisory before the tropical wave’s passage over the weekend and the organisation’s Director told reporters there was a good response.
“A lot of persons shared the message. We put it out on our various platforms. We were able to reach the wider population,” Jeffrey-Isimbert stated.
She also said NEMO received positive feedback from citizens, who declared that, due to the advisory, they were able to prepare for the tropical wave.
The NEMO official said the organisation wants to ensure that people follow the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services for weather updates....
