Juneteenth in New Jersey: Activists Want Reparations Bill ASAP

On this Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black individuals in the United States, the People’s Organization For Progress (POP) has urgently advocated for the advancement of Reparations legislation at both state and federal levels. "Today, more than ever, we demand reparations for African Americans, whose ancestors endured centuries of enslavement," stated Lawrence Hamm, Chairman of POP. "We must be compensated for the exploited labor that forged the fortune of this nation,” he emphasized. Hamm urged the passage of A602/S3164 and the federal bills HR 40 and S40, which would create crucial reparative task forces. He highlighted the significance of establishing a reparations commission, stating that if legislative measures fail, executive orders should suffice. The call for reparations resonates nationwide among organizations and activists, connecting deeply to the legacy of racial terror and systemic injustice. "Juneteenth and Reparations are intertwined; discussing one inherently involves the other," Hamm concluded.
