Smithfield Honors Its First Black Mayor with a New Street Sign

On March 19, Smithfield honored its first Black mayor with the unveiling of “James Chapman Way.” This ceremony marked the conclusion of a street renaming initiative, which began years ago, culminating in the Town Council's renaming of Quail Street on May 27, 2024, after James Chapman, elected in 1978.
