The prospect of an 18-game NFL season, once considered a foregone conclusion, is now uncertain.David White, the interim executive director of the NFL Players Association, informed The Associated Press that discussions regarding the expansion of the regular season, which was increased to 17 games in 2021, have not taken place. White described a recent meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in New York as promising, establishing a foundation for “open and respectful” dialogue between the two parties.“While the league is entitled to bring issues to the table, we haven’t yet broached this one, nor should it be regarded as a given,” White remarked in a comprehensive 45-minute interview with the AP. The extension of the season would necessitate new negotiations around the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, set to expire in March 2031.As the NFL prepares for its season opener in Philadelphia, White is meeting players across various cities. Having recently succeeded Lloyd Howell, he emphasized his commitment to restoring faith in the union's leadership and enhancing its image.
