Two years have passed since an Oklahoma officer shot Demetrize Carter in the chest during a tumultuous high school football game where gunfire erupted amidst a student altercation. Officer Shawn Hogue claimed he perceived Carter, a Black man, as a threat due to him allegedly holding “something black” in his hand, instigating his fear for safety.
However, body camera footage confirming these claims has yet to be released, even after Hogue was acquitted of any wrongdoing. Now 45, Carter has initiated a federal lawsuit against Hogue, asserting he had his hands raised when shot and accusing the officer of racial bias.
Carter's attorney, Billy Clark, argues Hogue’s past encounters with Carter prejudiced his actions. The shooting unfolded on August 25, 2023, during a chaotic moment that left Carter critically injured while he attempted to assist another gunshot victim. The lawsuit highlights systemic issues surrounding police transparency and accountability.
