In January 2023, seven-year-old Jaevion Riley was urgently hospitalized after suffering severe burns and abuse inflicted by his father, Murtadah Mohammad, who had shared custody with the child’s mother.
The boy, celebrated for his radiant smile, tragically succumbed to life-threatening injuries, experiencing cardiac arrest twice and requiring resuscitation.
Jaevion’s mother, Rainah Riley, expressed her heartbreak, stating, “He died twice.”
On May 27, Mohammad received a 45-year prison sentence for the murder, a decision deemed insufficient by Riley, who described state authorities’ disregard for her repeated warnings. Despite expressing concern over visible injuries on her son, the New Hampshire Division for Children, Youth, and Families failed to intervene.
Mohammad, who pled guilty to reckless second-degree murder, delayed calling for help for twelve critical hours, subjecting Jaevion to unbearable suffering, as highlighted in court. Judge William Delker called the case a disturbing "sustained campaign of abuse."
