North Carolina Central University Announces Plans for Architectural Design Degree Program

North Carolina Central University is creating a new architectural design degree program, which will be the first of its kind at a historically Black college or university. Brenda Faison, director of the North Carolina Central University Art Museum and chair of the department of art and design, first thought to introduce an architecture program two years ago when revising the department’s curriculum. The first step in establishing the architecture program was recruiting Scott Singeisen to serve as associate professor of architecture. He began teaching to three students on an independent study basis during the fall 2023 semester. During the spring 2024 semester, the university will offer its first courses in architectural design: “Digital Representation for Architecture” and “Fundamentals of Structures and Materials.” As more students enroll in these classes, the university will establish an official concentration or minor in architecture, with a goal to establish a four-year bachelor’s degree program within the next five to ten years. North Carolina Central University plans to partner with art and design high schools and community colleges to recruit students interested in an architecture career.
