On Friday, August 13, in Menlo Park, Belle Haven Action welcomed Prince Dean, the visionary behind Nubian Sharks, a San Francisco-based swim and aquatics initiative. This program is dedicated to educating Black youth and families about water safety, health equity, and cultural pride through accessible swimming lessons and aquatic wellness. The workshop, which ran from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., began with essential safety briefings followed by exercises in one of two Olympic-sized pools. Engaging lifeguards oversaw the sessions, creating a supportive environment where participants felt comfortable asking questions. Dean's inspiration stems from witnessing the health struggles of his grandmother, which fueled his commitment to address community disparities. He articulated, “Black youth are 5.5 times more likely to drown than their white peers.” The organization's achievements include training over 100 youth and organizing family swim events, with plans to expand its offerings by 2025. The event took place at the Belle Haven Community Campus, a facility brimming with resources for community enrichment. Participants left invigorated, with Dean hoping to inspire future Olympians.
