The president of the Saint Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA) is thrilled as the nation prepares to welcome the OECS Invitational Boxing Championships in just weeks. Over 100 boxers from eight regions will gather at the Beausejour Gymnasium from August 1 to 3. As reigning OECS champions, Saint Lucia’s athletes anticipate strong competition, with an invitational format that includes talent from throughout the Caribbean and beyond, reaching even North America.David Shakes Christopher, SLBA president, promises a vibrant event showcasing Creole culture, even grander than last year’s edition. Notable participants include boxers from Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, alongside newcomers from Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Cayenne. "This tournament represents our commitment to boxing excellence," Christopher said. While challenges persist due to political interference in boxing, he remains optimistic about nurturing boxers capable of achieving international success, driven by recent support from local sports authorities and international collaboration.
