KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In the coming weeks, the periodical cicadas of Brood XIV, last seen in 2008, will emerge to sing and mate before laying eggs for the next emergence in 17 years. Expected to appear when soil temperatures reach 64 degrees, they will cover East Tennessee and parts of Middle and West Tennessee. These cicadas, harmless to humans and pets, may damage young plants during egg-laying. After mating, females lay hundreds of eggs, which hatch in weeks, marking the lifecycle's beginning anew.
