Career In Dentistry: A Hands-On Program for Aspiring Dental Professionals

High school students from various regions gathered to envision their potential futures in healthcare during Dentistry Day at Southern Illinois University’s School of Dental Medicine. This comprehensive event, part of the BESt Healthcare Institute’s 2025 summer initiative, integrated engaging activities and expert-led discussions to immerse teens from diverse backgrounds in the fields of medicine and dentistry. Paul Brown, a senior at Parkway Central High School, expressed enthusiasm for dermatology and enjoyed the practical experience, stating, “I think I’m quite adept at filling cavities, so this might be a viable option.” Similarly, Tracy Machuki from Pattonville High School reflected on her interest in combining pediatrics and dentistry, noting her enjoyable day. The four-week program, in collaboration with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Express Scripts, Inc., and Washington University in St. Louis, aimed to inspire future medical professionals. Dr. Nathalia Garcia emphasized providing enriching experiences that showcase the dental health career's rewarding nature, while students found validation through peer testimonials and mentorship. A’lonn Love, an SIU dental student, highlighted the need for more diverse voices in dentistry.
