On June 6, Sacramento Moms Demand Action organized a screening of “Put Down the Guns,” a poignant film featuring Ice-T that illuminates the complex societal issues fueling violence. The historic Guild Theater in Oak Park hosted this significant event, with survivors, advocates, and community members donning orange attire to honor victims and promote awareness. The event, spearheaded by Sacramento Moms Demand Action chair Deborah Grimes and Debra Ellison from Stockton, included a panel discussion addressing the mental health repercussions of gun violence.Grimes, who tragically lost her son Gregory “Najee” Grimes to gun violence in 2022, expressed her hope that the film would prompt a reevaluation of societal approaches to violence. Moderated by Berry Accius, founder of Voice of the Youth, the panel featured parents like Anita Razo, who highlighted the enduring pain of losing a child and the importance of community support. The panelists unanimously recognized the critical need for mental health services in Sacramento County, as many struggle to find appropriate support while grieving.
