In January 2025, the NAACP along with the law firm Singleton Schreiber initiated a lawsuit against Southern California Edison Company and Edison International, representing Altadena residents who experienced devastating losses from the Eaton Fire.The suit asserts that the fire, which devastated over 14,000 acres, resulted in 19 fatalities and displaced countless individuals, ignited when sparks from Edison’s equipment set ablaze dry vegetation in Eaton Canyon. The plaintiffs claim Edison neglected to implement sufficient safety measures in an area recognized as a high fire risk.Altadena, a historic community home to a significant Black Californian population, faced severe destruction. The NAACP and Singleton Schreiber intend not only to hold Edison responsible but to ensure underserved communities receive proper recovery resources and compensation.Gerald Singleton of Singleton Schreiber shared insights with California Black Media regarding the lawsuit, recovery initiatives, and the challenging journey ahead for survivors.
