Hakeem Jeffries Calls Out Abbott, GOP Over Partisan Redistricting

Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries traveled to Austin, Texas, on Wednesday to speak out against Republican-led efforts to redraw the state’s congressional district lines. The move follows former President Donald Trump’s claim that Texas could add five more congressional seats. Republicans, who control both the legislature and the Governor’s Mansion, convened a special session focused on redistricting.“Donald Trump ordered Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans to race back to Austin for a special legislative session,” Jeffries said, standing alongside congressional colleagues and Texas state officials. “Our message to the people of Texas and to this great country is simple: You deserve better.”Jeffries criticized the session’s focus, arguing it should address pressing concerns like health care access instead of partisan mapmaking designed to disadvantage Democrats. He also tied the redistricting push to the recently signed Trump tax plan, passed on July 4, warning it could threaten health care coverage for millions of Americans. Jeffries urged Texans to reject political gamesmanship and demand fair representation.
