The UK-based organization Women in Sport proudly advocates its motto, “Because women and girls belong.” Recognizing the critical issue of inclusivity for Black girls in athletics, the organization conducted extensive research culminating in last month’s report, “Black Girls and Sport: A Break Up Story.” Alongside it, a compelling campaign video titled “Dear Sport” was launched, featuring Black girls articulating their love for sports while highlighting their withdrawal from organized activities. Tanya Martin, head of insight and innovation at Women in Sport, emphasized, “We’ve spent the last 18 years studying teenage girls, acknowledging the challenges during this life stage.” Notably, Martin revealed that Black girls exhibit enthusiasm for sports, with aspirations of becoming top athletes, yet they have the lowest physical activity among all ethnic groups. The report indicates that while 85% of Black girls value physical engagement, only 14% maintain active lifestyles outside school. Women in Sport urges leaders to confront misogyny and racism in sports, advocating for joyful participation.
